Le Sette Porte, or ‘the Seven Doors’ is a site-specific work, conceived to espouse the architectural characteristics of the portico of the Citadella Viscontea in Città Alta, with the narration of the seven stages of Mary and Joseph’s presumable journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem.

This long journey, of more than 150 kilometres, is mentioned only in the Gospel of Luke, as well as in the Apocrypha. We know nothing about how it took place; we know nothing of the difficulties of such an undertaking, carried out with the sole support of a donkey to transport their necessities, and in the company of one of Joseph’s brothers.

With the help of the Tabula Peutingeriana, a medieval replica of a 1st-4th century map, the possible route was reconstructed. The seven stylized cities are made in neon, suspended between the arches of the portico and are symbolically united by a poem by George Abraham.

Le Sette Porte is a work created by the artist Matteo Rubbi thanks to the contribution of Persico Group and G.E.G. Telecomunicazioni and is exhibited in the portico of the northern facade of the Citadella Viscontea in Città Alta.

Accademia Carrara

The Accademia Carrara art gallery offers visitors an exhibition of over three hundred works including paintings and sculptures of international importance, for a journey through five centuries of the history of Italian art from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century. It was founded in 1796 because of the visionary idea of the Bergamo nobleman Giacomo Carrara, who created a museum that was born from his passion as a collector and connoisseur.

Accademia Carrara is directed by M. Cristina Rodeschini and stands out in the Italian artistic panorama for the identity of its heritage: it has always been considered the ‘house of collections’ for the quality and quantity of donors who have made its collection so extraordinary.

A custodian of the great names in the history of art between the 15th and 19th centuries - Pisanello, Foppa, Crivelli, Bellini, Mantegna, Raffaello, Botticelli, Bergognone, Carpaccio, Palma Il Vecchio, Tiziano, Baschenis, Fra Galgario, Tiepolo, Canaletto, Hayez, Piccio, Pellizza da Volpedo - Accademia Carrara is among the most important corpuses in the world of works by Lorenzo Lotto and Giovan Battista Moroni, as well as part of the Visconti Sforza deck of Tarots dating back to the 15th century.
